November Guest - Amy Martin

Hiya everyone! I am super excited about our guest today for many reasons!! One of them being that I have known her since 2006 when I discovered digital scrapbooking. I know many of you might recognize her from her paper scrapping days! She is one of the women in the industry that have rocked both the digi and paper scrapbooking worlds in a way few have done! She was also one of the founders of one of my favorite stores The Lilypad; and sells her awesome designs there as well! All that aside the reason we asked Amy to be our guest this month is because she is an artist who inspires. She is continually finding innovative designs and creative ways to document life. I can't wait to see what she does this month! I am going to let Amy tell you a little more about herself!

I am a believer, wife and mother.  I have been married to my best friend for over a decade and have four lovely children to continue the legacy.  I take things as they come and am extremely content in my life...  I snap way too many pictures, as my children will readily agree!  I have been doing some sort of scrapping for years; however, I dove into digital scrapping in '03 and started to dabble in hybrid shortly thereafter.  I have had my work featured in most every major scrapbook publication and have been honored as a '08 Creating Keepsakes Hall of Fame winner and an '09 Making Memories Master.

I wanted to show you a couple of my favorite layouts from Amy,
I know she will inspire you as much as she has inspired me!

Juicy (yeah her hybrid projects are just amazing!)

Please check out more of Amy's work here
And visit her blog here

I was super excited to see what Amy would create with the Freckled Fawn Products,
and while I can't share it all with you just yet I wanted to give you a sneak!

HOW MUCH FUN IS THAT!? Its one of those layouts I could look at forever and think
"how did she do that"; "oh I LOVE that, I am going to do that next time!". For those wondering,
she used a brown paper bag as her base! I LOVE how that turned out!

Banner Challenge -- Use that Stash

Hi friends, it's Ursula again with a fun challenge for you.

Are you ready....................?

Here goes, use your washi tape to create a BANNER.  There are lots of ways you can do this.

  • fold tape over some string and cut it to shape (or don't)
  • use the tutorial from my birthday post to create some washi paper and punch banner shapes, adhere as desired.
  • sew punched shapes to create a string of them that you can drape across your page

What other methods can you come up with?

Here's what I did!

You can see that I chose to sew my shapes together.

I also wanted to show you a fun way to use the 'to do' pad sheets.  I adhered to a sheet of copy paper and then punched out just the part I wanted using a tab punch.  Quick, easy and so fun!

Have fun, and don't forget to share your creations on the Freckled Fawn Facebook page.

Silhouette + Washi = Love --a Tutorial

Ursula here!

This is my current favorite photo of myself.  Anyone for Red lipstick???  Anyone?

I love leaving the edges of things loose on my pages to add dimension.

Originally, I was just going to use the cut out numbers, but after cutting them, I realized I liked all of the Washi paper I'd created and wanted to use it ALL!  So, I simply used some foam dots to raise my numbers up off the page so they'd be seen.

I'm going to share a quick tutorial with you today on how to cut Washi tape shapes using a die cutting machine such as a Silhouette.

This is super simple!  First, you choose the tapes  you'd like to use.  For this project, I used rainbow colors cause I happen to have a thing for rainbows.  In the sample I'm showing, I was using a predominately yellow color scheme.

You start with a sheet of copy paper.  Decide how much you need to cover to fit the design you'd like to cut or punch out.  Allow yourself some extra room for margin.

Now, simply lay down strips of tape on the paper in the order you'd like them to be.  The most important thing is that you stick them down smoothly so there are no wrinkles.  Feel free to overlap a bit so the transparency shows itself.

To get a super smooth piece, use a brayer to roll out any air bubbles. Once that is complete, you can trim your new 'paper' to the size you need it to be.

Finally, either punch shapes out of your Washi paper or run it through your Silhouette.

I do not recommend trying to cut shapes that are extremely intricate with washi tape as the rubber quality of the tape can cause a problem, however, simple shapes cut beautifully.  I use a cardstock setting and a blade depth of 4 on mine and I do a double cut to ensure my shape comes out.

Now you try!  And let us know what you come up with!

Washi Wednesday : Doelightful DIY

Hello lovelies
we are here with a Doelightful DIY!
provided by our guest DT Ursula

Washi Tape Switch Plate Cover

I recently moved a cabinet which had mostly covered up this ugly switch-plate cover in my kitchen.  Before, I hadn’t noticed just how ugly it was, but now, it was the only thing on the wall. Ugh!

Not to worry, Washi tape can cure most such difficulties.

This is a quick and easy project and I happen to think that the results are stunning and oh so much fun!

Start by unscrewing your switch-plate from the wall.  You may want to wash and dry it to get a nice clean surface for the tape to adhere to.

Once it is dry, simply start adding strips of tape.  I covered the whole surface, then went back and added shorter pieces to give it a more random, urban style look.  You can do this with lots of colors or keep it monochromatic, or even use only one tape, depending on your décor.

My house happens to literally have 8 different bright colors on the wall, Mexico style! So this random bright look works perfectly in my home.

Next, you need to trim out the tape that is in front of the switch holes.  Simply flip the cover plate over, so it is resting on it’s tape side.  Using an Exacto knife and a self-healing matt, cut away only the area of tape in front of those tiny windows.

When you turn it over, you can lift the edge of the cut out piece with the end of the Exacto knife.  You may need to use the knife from the front to finish the cuts.  Make sure you use a nice, sharp knife to do this so you don’t end up cutting into any more of your tape.

It should look like this:

Finally, shove the screws right through the tape from the top, you can start it with a piercing tool if you need to.  Screw back into place and Voila!!!

This technique can be use on all of your switch-plates, including outlets if you like!  Experiment with it and have fun!

Cheers, Ursula

Washi Jar

Ursula sent over another project. weeee!

Here's what she has to say:

"Do you remember 'The Republic of Tea?
Well there was a time when I used a LOT of their products and I ended up with a LOT of their sweet little cans.  But what can you do with so many?

I tore off the label and ended up with the naked can.

Next, I used standard Masking Tape to cover the can,
making sure to start each piece of tape in the same place so my seam would all be on the back.

Finally, choose a few favorite washi tapes in your color of choice and, beginning where the masking tape seam is, tape down one strip of tape at a time.  When you get to the top, some will be over hanging.  Grab a pair of sharp tipped scissors and snip at 1/4 inch intervals all the way around.  Then, just push those pieces down over the edge to cover it.

I finished with a Label sticker and some letter stickers from Studio Calico to spell the word 'Sweet'.
Add a final little decorative piece and fill with your favorite sweetener.  Recycling at it's best!

Have a tin jar?
Go cover it with some washi!

xoxo, Doe.

Washi Tape Letter

Ursula: "I love to write letters and decorate them using my washi tapes and brightly colored sharpie markers.
I usually begin by creating a border all the way around the paper.
After that, I grab a few colored markers and start writing.

I add a strip of tape to separate each paragraph, both to bring distinction and to add color and texture.
If there is a particular portion of the message that I really want to bring attention to,
I'll add a special box on the page that sort of says,
 'Hey You!! Look at me!'.
You can also use some punched shapes and stamps to add a little extra hutzpah to your page."

Ursula: "Decorating the envelope runs along the same lines.
You can add all sorts of things but do avoid dimensional items
as they aren't likely to make it through the post.
Imagine the delight on your friend or loved ones face
when this little beauty shows up in the mail box!

well, i've been inspired!
i'm off to write my own washi tape letter.

July Guest DT Member

We are pleased to announce our July guest DT member
the lovely, lovely Ursula Schneider!

Who's that girl???  Does anyone remember that song from Madonna?  In this case, that girl is Ursula Schneider.  I'm 40 and I'm proud.  I've been married for 20 years to the best looking guy on the planet who treats me like a woman ought to be treated.  I have four amazing children who are almost all grown up now, 1 dog and 1 kitty.  I'm a self-taught professional photographer and graphic designer. (no college education here.......and I'm still proud of what I've accomplished)  I'm a vocalist and a gourmet and I dabble in make-up artistry. I'm an avid reader, student of the bible and the Living God and a student of people, relationships, and of this beautiful world we all live in.  All of that study has culminated in a love for creating beautiful things with paper and photography through scrap-booking, art journaling and  whatever other formats strike my fancy.  My life is centered in the Sonoran Desert city of Tucson, Arizona but I hope to claim to be a world traveler one day.  I've got lots of dreams to fill up the rest of my life and I plan to make as many of them as possible come true, Lord willing and the creek don't rise, of course.  I love color, texture, paper, beauty, photography, travel, food,  my husband, my family and Jesus!  That's me!

Find her here:

We're pretty thrilled to have Ursula on board the month of July.
give her a happy welcome :)

xoxo, Doe.
